What is an Episiotomy Incision?

During labor, when the baby descends from the vaginal canal and comes out, the incoming part may cause irregular and prolonged tears at the entrance of the vagina or the inner canal. In order to avoid such tears, the birth process is facilitated by making an incision with scissors in the area we call the 'Perineum'.

This cutting with scissors during the emergence of the baby is called 'episiotomy incision', 'episiotomy incision' or 'birth incision'.

The episiotomy incision is then closed with stitches placed in this area. Thus, during the puerperium period, the episio stitches are also healed. In some cases, the episiotomy incision does not heal well, and even after healing, a scar may remain in the perineum.

In Which Situations Does the Episio Incision Heal Badly?

The episio incision made during vaginal delivery may be prolonged (become longer) or poorly healed in some cases.

Situations Where Birth Stitch Marks Are More Obvious

Difficult Births: In difficult, long-lasting and traumatic births, excessive edema and rupture of the perineum may be more common than normal. In particular, the use of assistive instruments such as vacuum and forceps may cause the length of the birth incision and the postpartum suture marks to be more prominent.
Inflammation of postpartum stitches: As a result of inflammation of the vaginal postpartum stitches, the stitches may open spontaneously. The 'granulation tissue' formed in the sutures opened due to infection may cause an aesthetically bad appearance. Therefore, postpartum perineal care and cleaning is an extremely important issue.
Failure of the birth sutures, non-union of the incision: Depending on the perineal repair technique, non-retention and opening may occur in the sutures at birth. Failure of birth suture marks and premature opening; It can also occur due to sudden stretching of the perineum and inflammation of the perineum.
Unrepaired perineal tears: Perineal tears that develop in hospital or home births may show a bad appearance at the entrance of the vagina when not repaired. Vaginal gaping, which is characterized by seeing the inside of the vagina when viewed from the outside, can be uncomfortable, but is also a frequent cause of vaginal infections.
Deep perineal tears: Deep perineal tears in deep and prolonged episiotomies take longer to heal. After healing, suture marks from birth may be more frequent and obvious.
