Intrauterine Biopsy (Endometrial Biopsy)

The process of taking a small piece of tissue from the inner wall of the uterus, called the endometrium, is called intrauterine biopsy, a piece from the uterus or endometrial biopsy. If suspicious results are obtained in PAP Smear tests, intrauterine biopsy should be performed without delay in women with irregular menstrual periods, excessive bleeding during menstrual periods, no menstruation, thickening of the uterine wall, and bleeding after the use of breast cancer drugs.

Why is Intrauterine Biopsy Performed?

Endometrial biopsy can be performed to diagnose uterine anomalies, to determine the cause of postmenopausal bleeding, to screen for endometrial cancer, to increase fertility, and to understand the reaction to hormone therapy.

Since intrauterine biopsy may cause miscarriage, during pregnancy, in those who have blood clotting problems; It is not applied when there is inflammation in the pelvic region, infection in the cervix or vagina.

How Is Endometrial Biopsy Performed?

Intrauterine biopsy, which can be applied to women in the clinical setting, even without anesthesia, is a very easy procedure that can be completed in about 10 minutes.

In order to take a piece from the uterus, women should lie on the examination table, as when performing the smear test. Experts open the vaginal canal with a speculum. After the opening occurs, the uterine canal, the uterus and finally the inner wall of the uterus are reached with a special tool. The procedure is completed by taking a tissue sample from the inner wall of the uterus. The tissue sample taken is sent to the laboratory for analysis.

After the intrauterine biopsy is completed, the patient can return home. It is possible to have light bleeding in the form of spotting for 1 week. Therefore, it is recommended not to have sexual intercourse.

Importance of Intrauterine Biopsy

Intrauterine biopsy to diagnose endometrial cancer or uterine wall thickening; It is also considered as an important diagnostic method in order to reveal the causes of recurrent miscarriages. Intrauterine biopsy, which may cause complications such as bleeding, infection and, rarely, uterine injury; It should only be performed by experienced Gynecologists and Obstetricians.
